On January 1, 2017, Fort Ontario will be putting on a free, 3K, “First Day Hike” around the 262 year old military reservation, Fort Ontario. This event will take place at 10 AM and will be led by Fort Ontario Superintendent Paul Lear.

This event will be based off of how the fort served as a hospital for many wounded or ill soldiers from 1917 to 1919. This is the basis to the hike due to the fact that this upcoming year, 2017, with be the centennial of the United States’ entry into World War I. Any who take part on this expedition are guaranteed to expand their knowledge on the subject. In addition to a great experience and a learning opportunity, the first 200 hikers will be issued “First Day Hike” fleece hats.

The nationwide First Day Walks are “intended to encourage people to begin the New Year by rejuvenating and reconnecting with the outdoors,” said Lear. “Two- and four-legged hikers are advised to dress for Oswego’s more invigorating wind and temperatures than inland locations.” In case of cancellation due to weather, stay updated with the Friends of Fort Ontario Facebook page.

Light refreshments will be provided for participants. Biscuits and water will also be provided for those who decide to bring their dogs to the hike as well.

If you are looking for a fun and educational way to kick off your 2017, consider taking part in the “First Day Hike” and explore the beauty here in our own town of Oswego. The hike begins outside of the stone fort itself, which is located at the north end of East Fourth Street, at 10 AM.

For more information on the Fort Ontario “First Day Hike,” call Lear at 315-343-4711, or email Paul.Lear@parks.ny.gov.
